If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front explores two of America’s most pressing issues — environmentalism and terrorism — by lifting the veil on a radical environmental group the FBI calls America’s “number one domestic terrorism threat.” Daniel McGowan, a former member of the Earth Liberation Front, faces life in prison for two multimillion-dollar arsons against Oregon timber companies. What turned this working-class kid from Queens into an eco-warrior? Marshall Curry (Oscar®-nominated Street Fight, POV 2005) provides a nuanced and provocative account that is part coming-of-age story, part cautionary tale and part cops-and-robbers thriller. A co-production of ITVS. Winner of Best Documentary Editing Award, 2011 Sundance Film Festival. (90 minutes)

Here are the elements of a story. They are simple, yet I think this works. To tell your story, you simply (yeah, right) complete the sentences.

1. Once upon a time … The beginning, the setting of the scene, the introduction of a character

2. Every day … The life of the character as it is, and is about to be disrupted

3. Until this … Something happens, the inciting incident, that throws a character’s life out of whack

4. Because of this … The character reacts with an attempt to put her life back on track, but there are complications.

5. Because of this … The effort fails, and then the character tries again (there can be a series of these), and there are complications.

6. Until finally … The climax, the point in the story that the character achieves her goal

7. For every day … The resolution, the tying of things together (or not, if you have an ironic ending) that completes the story experience.

Grant Morrison, ComiCon 2006

Excerpt: Source(Dazed Digital)

Grant Morrison’s Supergods

The ancient Greeks had gods, after we killed all the gods we created and comic book heroes as a replacement. In his new book, Supergods, comic book legend Grant Morrison lays out the history and dissects the social significance of masked heroes and villains, tracing the context that encouraged their creation. Just as for the Greeks gods were seen as embodiments of human traits and not as metaphysical entities, Morrison’s analysis suggests that superheroes came to fill a similar role, representing human desire and anxieties that allow these characters to permeate from their fictional world into our own reality.

For comic book nerds, Supergods is thick with historical detail yet it’s Morrison’s own broader observations and theorising that makes the book so fascinating and, despite its 500 odd pages, drives it forward. Dazed Digital sat down with Grant Morrison to chat about optimism, fetishism and transvestite guerrillas.

Escape to New York

The protagonists of children’s books are usually orphans. The family home is a prison that must be demolished before the book can begin. Only once they are freed from their cells and captors can the characters’ adventure begin. Out of the cradle and into the boxcar, or boarding school; the best world is the one without parents.

Citizens registered as an Independent, Democra...

Abstract
We use a field experiment to investigate whether race affects how responsive state legislators are to requests for help with registering to vote. In an email sent to each legislator, we randomized whether a putatively black or white alias was used and whether the email signaled the sender’s
partisan preference. Overall, we find that putatively black requests receive fewer replies. Weexplore two potential explanations for this discrimination: strategic partisan behavior and the legislators’ own race. We find that the putatively black alias continues to be differentially treated even when the emails signal partisanship, indicating that strategic considerations cannot
completely explain the observed differential treatment. Further analysis reveals that white legislators of both parties exhibit similar levels of discrimination against the black alias. Minority legislators do the opposite, responding more frequently to the black alias. Implications for the study of race and politics in the United States are discussed.

reity Zinta (Hindi: प्रीति ज़िंटा, pronounced [ˈpriːt̪i ˈzɪɳʈaː]; born 31 January 1975)[1] is an Indian film actress. She has appeared in Hindi films of Bollywood, as well as Telugu, Punjabi and English language films. After graduating with a degree in criminal psychology, Zinta made her acting debut in Dil Se in 1998 followed by a role in Soldier the same year. These performances earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, and she was later recognised for her role as a teenage single mother in Kya Kehna (2000). She subsequently played a variety of character types; her film roles along with her screen persona contributed to a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine.[2]
Zinta received a Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 2003 for her performance in the drama Kal Ho Naa Ho. She went on to play the lead female role in two consecutive annual top-grossing films in India: the science fiction film Koi… Mil Gaya, her biggest commercial success,[3] and the star-crossed romance Veer-Zaara, which earned her critical acclaim. She was later noted for her portrayal of independent, modern Indian women in Salaam Namaste and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, top-grossing productions in overseas markets.[4] These accomplishments have established her as a leading actress of Hindi cinema.[5][6] Her first international film role was in the Canadian film Heaven on Earth, for which she was awarded the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the 2008 Chicago International Film Festival.[7]
In addition to movie acting, Zinta has written a series of columns for BBC News Online South Asia, is a television presenter, a regular stage performer, and along with ex-boyfriend Ness Wadia she is a co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kings XI Punjab. She is known in the Indian media for publicly speaking her mind and openly expressing her opinions, and consequently has sparked the occasional controversy.[8][9] These controversies include her being the only witness not to retract in court her earlier statements against the Indian mafia during the 2003 Bharat Shah case, for which she was awarded the Godfrey Phillips National Bravery Award.
